A well-crafted press release is a powerful tool to generate media coverage, attract attention to your book, and position yourself as a noteworthy author. Whether you're launching a book, announcing an event, or sharing big news, here’s how to write a compelling press release that gets results.
1. Start with a Strong Headline
Your headline should be short, clear, and attention-grabbing. It should quickly tell the reader what your press release is about and why it matters.
Example: "Debut Author [Your Name] Releases Gripping Thriller [Book Title], Now Available Worldwide"
2. Craft a Compelling Lead Paragraph
The first paragraph should answer the who, what, when, where, and why of your announcement. Journalists and readers should immediately understand the significance of your news.
Example: "[Your Name], an emerging voice in [genre], is set to captivate readers with [Book Title], a [brief description of the book]. Scheduled for release on [date], the book delves into [key themes] and has already garnered praise from [early reviewers, endorsements, etc.]."
3. Provide More Details in the Body
After the introduction, use the following paragraphs to expand on:
What makes your book unique
A short author bio
Notable endorsements or reviews
Where the book is available (Amazon, bookstores, etc.)
Any relevant event details (book signings, launch parties, interviews)
4. Add a Quote for a Personal Touch
Including a quote from you (or an industry expert) adds credibility and personality.
Example: "Writing [Book Title] was a deeply personal journey, and I can't wait to share it with readers who love [genre/theme]," says [Your Name].
5. Include a Call to Action
Tell the reader what to do next—whether it’s contacting you for an interview, attending an event, or purchasing the book.
Example: "For media inquiries, review copies, or interview requests, contact [Your Name] at [email] or visit [website]."
6. End with a Boilerplate
A boilerplate is a short paragraph at the end that provides background on you and your work.
Example: "[Your Name] is an award-winning author specializing in [genre]. [He/She/They] has been featured in [media outlets] and is passionate about storytelling that [key themes or message]. Learn more at [website]."
7. Format Properly
Keep it one page (400-600 words)
Use third-person voice
Keep paragraphs short and concise
Use a professional tone
Example Press Release Template
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE[Headline][City, State] – [Date] – [Opening paragraph with key details][Supporting paragraphs with more information][Quote from the author or relevant person][Call to action & media contact details][Boilerplate]
